Cannabis laws in Bangkok, Thailand
Medical only
Bangkok's cannabis shops are not legal recreational dispensaries — official tourist guidance requires a prescription issued in Thailand.
Official sources checked November 7, 2026. This is news information, not legal advice. Laws and local penalties change — confirm with the destination's official sources before you travel.
Before you fly
Carrying cannabis across a border is treated separately from possessing it inside the country. Even where buying is legal, taking it onto a plane can be a customs or smuggling offence, and a domestic flight can become an international one the moment you connect somewhere else.
Current law at a glance
- Buying as a visitor
- National rules apply in Bangkok. Official tourist guidance says tourists need a prescription issued in Thailand by an appropriately licensed practitioner, that dispensing must be medically necessary and that supply is limited to 30 days. Use licensed medical providers and licensed sellers rather than unverified walk-in shops.
- Possession
- No recreational gram allowance was verified. Tourists must not buy, possess or transport cannabis flower without the required prescription. The 30-day figure is a dispensing restriction, not a general possession allowance, and exact penalties for unauthorized flower possession by a visitor were not verified.
- Smoking in public
- Official tourism guidance warns that public cannabis smoking can attract up to three months' imprisonment and a THB 25,000 fine, with smoke that is a public-health nuisance especially relevant. Do not read that as a universally automatic street-smoking fine.
- Home growing
- The 2022 official guidance allowed household cultivation following registration and commercial cultivation with permission. Whether a foreign visitor can currently register and cultivate, and the complete November 2026 requirements, are unverified — do not assume you may grow at rented accommodation.
- Medical cannabis
- Access runs through Thai medical assessment and prescription. A foreign cannabis prescription was not verified as sufficient; consult a licensed Thai provider rather than assuming reciprocity.
- Borders
- Official tourist guidance prohibits travelers importing cannabis or hemp plant parts and specified cannabis or hemp products. Do not carry flower, oils or edibles across the border on the strength of a Thai prescription. Export permissions and exact border penalties are unverified.
- CBD and the 2026 reform
- The 0.2% THC threshold concerns extracts — it is not a universal flower-potency limit or permission to import CBD. The Health Ministry announced Cabinet approval of a draft Cannabis Control Act on 22 September 2026; Cabinet approval is not enactment, and relisting cannabis as a narcotic was not verified.
Key dates and proposed changes

Can I smoke on the street?
Do not. Official guidance warns of up to three months in prison and a THB 25,000 fine for public smoking, and public-health nuisance enforcement is relevant.

Can I use my foreign medical prescription?
Do not assume so — official tourist guidance specifically requires a prescription issued in Thailand. Consult a licensed Thai medical provider.

Can I bring it into Thailand or fly home with it?
Do not bring cannabis across the border as an ordinary tourist. A local purchase or a Thai prescription does not establish import or export permission, or legality in transit and destination countries.

What about CBD?
An extract's THC concentration matters, but being below 0.2% THC does not make every product or border movement lawful. Product-specific approval and import exceptions are unverified.
