Cannabis laws in Prague, Czech Republic
Legal for adults
Limited adult possession and home growing became legal in January 2026, but Prague still has no legal recreational retail market.
Official sources checked November 6, 2026. This is news information, not legal advice. Laws and local penalties change — confirm with the destination's official sources before you travel.
Before you fly
Carrying cannabis across a border is treated separately from possessing it inside the country. Even where buying is legal, taking it onto a plane can be a customs or smuggling offence, and a domestic flight can become an international one the moment you connect somewhere else.
Current law at a glance
- Buying as a visitor
- The 2026 reform legalized limited personal possession and cultivation, not a retail market. Tourists should not assume cannabis-themed shops may legally sell intoxicating cannabis, and no authorized recreational purchase route was verified.
- Possession
- For adults 21 and over, official reporting describes legal personal possession of up to 100 g in your own dwelling or 25 g elsewhere. More than 100–200 g at home, or more than 25–50 g outside, is an administrative offence with a fine ceiling of CZK 50,000; more than 200 g at home or 50 g outside brings criminal liability, with a basic maximum of six months in prison. Under-21 possession is not covered, and whether a hotel room counts as your own dwelling was not verified.
- Smoking in public
- Legal possession is not a licence to smoke anywhere. National health-protection law governs smoking and substance use, but a current Prague-specific street-smoking rule, location list and fine were not verified — do not rely on older police pages either way.
- Medical cannabis
- Medical cannabis is dispensed by pharmacies against a restricted electronic prescription. Nothing checked establishes that a foreign prescription or medical card alone lets a visitor obtain cannabis — confirm with a Czech doctor and pharmacy.
- Home growing
- From 1 January 2026, adults 21 and over may grow, harvest and process up to three plants for personal use at property they have a legal relationship with. Four or five plants is an administrative offence; more than five brings criminal liability. That is not permission to grow in a hotel or holiday rental.
- Borders
- The reform covers domestic possession and cultivation only; no recreational import or export allowance was established. Do not carry recreational cannabis across borders, including inside Schengen. Medical patients are told to check legality in destination and transit countries.

Practical questions
Can I buy weed in Prague?
Not through a verified legal retail system. Legalizing possession and home growing does not authorize shops or dealers to sell intoxicating cannabis.

How much can I carry?
For adults 21 and over, up to 25 g outside your own dwelling for personal use. Do not treat the 100 g dwelling limit as a luggage allowance or assume it covers a hotel room, and note that under-21 travellers are not covered.

Can I smoke on the street?
An unrestricted right to smoke publicly was not verified. Smoking and substance-use restrictions still apply, and current Prague-specific rules and fine amounts need further official confirmation.

Can I bring it in, or fly home with it?
Do not transport recreational cannabis internationally. The domestic reform is not an import or export permission, including inside Schengen. Medical patients must separately establish destination and transit legality and carry the right documents.

Can I use a foreign medical cannabis prescription?
Automatic acceptance was not verified. Pharmacies dispense using restricted electronic prescriptions, so get advice from a Czech prescriber and pharmacy before relying on local access.

What about CBD and THC thresholds?
Official reporting distinguishes the regulated cannabis regime by a THC threshold above 1%. That is not a blanket authorization for every CBD food, extract, vape or border crossing — product-specific retail and import legality was not verified.
