Cannabis laws in Switzerland
Decriminalized
Tourists can buy compliant cannabis below 1% THC, but cannot use the resident-only pilot studies to buy high-THC cannabis.
Official sources checked November 6, 2026. This is news information, not legal advice. Laws and local penalties change — confirm with the destination's official sources before you travel.
Before you fly
Carrying cannabis across a border is treated separately from possessing it inside the country. Even where buying is legal, taking it onto a plane can be a customs or smuggling offence, and a domestic flight can become an international one the moment you connect somewhere else.
Current law at a glance
- Buying as a visitor
- Cannabis with less than 1% THC sits outside narcotics control, though product, age and other retail rules still apply. Cannabis at 1% THC or more is controlled. The threshold is verified, but the exact date and instrument of the historical change were not — so do not describe it as a new 2026 legalization.
- Pilot studies
- Pilot supply is not tourist retail. Federal eligibility requires adulthood, capacity to consent, existing cannabis use, residence in the canton running the trial and written study consent, and individual trials can add conditions. Sales happen only through the relevant study's authorized arrangements.
- Possession
- Possession of no more than 10 grams for personal consumption is not punished, but that is not permission to buy, import or consume high-THC cannabis. Adult consumption can attract a CHF100 fixed penalty, and more than 10 grams is not covered by the exemption.
- Smoking in public
- High-THC recreational consumption remains prohibited, publicly or privately, outside authorized exceptions, with a published CHF100 fixed adult penalty. Compliant low-THC smoking still follows smoke-free and local rules, and no uniform countrywide additional street-smoking fine was verified.
- Medical cannabis and home growing
- Doctors may prescribe medical cannabis without an individual federal exceptional authorization under the post-August 2022 regime, but automatic dispensing against a foreign prescription was not verified. Growing cannabis below 1% THC privately is permitted according to official guidance; ordinary recreational cultivation at 1% or above stays prohibited.
- Customs
- The 10-gram exemption does not authorize recreational import or export. Travelers may carry qualifying controlled medicines for a maximum 30-day treatment supply under the documentation rules, and destination law must also permit the movement. The medicines authority separates temporary medical travel from buying cannabis abroad and bringing it home.

Practical questions
Can a tourist buy weed in Switzerland?
You can buy compliant low-THC products below 1% THC, subject to retail requirements. There is no general tourist channel for cannabis at 1% THC or above.

Can I join a pilot study during my holiday?
Not as an ordinary non-resident tourist. Federal eligibility includes living in the canton where the trial runs, existing cannabis use and written participation consent.

Can I smoke on the street if I have less than 10 grams?
The possession exemption does not legalize consumption. Adult high-THC consumption can bring a CHF100 fixed penalty, and low-THC smoking must still follow smoke-free and local restrictions.

Can I fly home with cannabis or CBD flower?
Do not export high-THC recreational cannabis. A product lawful below Switzerland's 1% threshold may be illegal at your destination or in transit, and prescribed controlled medicines follow separate documentation and maximum 30-day supply rules.

Can I bring prescribed cannabis into Switzerland?
Qualifying medical travelers may carry a maximum 30-day treatment supply. Use your home country's medical travel documentation, or the form the medicines authority provides where your country does not issue one, and confirm the exact preparation before travel.
What about CBD and the THC threshold?
CBD itself is not the narcotics trigger — the product's THC content and category matter. The verified threshold is strictly below 1%, not 1% or less, and it does not guarantee every CBD food, medicine or cosmetic is marketable.
