Cannabis laws in Vienna, Austria
Illegal
Tourists cannot legally buy recreational THC cannabis in Vienna, and Austria has no lawful personal-possession gram allowance.
Official sources checked November 6, 2026. This is news information, not legal advice. Laws and local penalties change — confirm with the destination's official sources before you travel.
Before you fly
Carrying cannabis across a border is treated separately from possessing it inside the country. Even where buying is legal, taking it onto a plane can be a customs or smuggling offence, and a domestic flight can become an international one the moment you connect somewhere else.
Current law at a glance
- Buying as a visitor
- Unauthorized acquisition, possession, supply and sale of narcotic cannabis are prohibited nationwide. Vienna has no verified legal recreational tourist route, and hemp or CBD shops do not establish permission to sell intoxicating cannabis.
- Possession
- There is no legal recreational allowance. Under the Narcotics Act section 27, the basic offence carries up to one year in prison or 360 daily-rate fines; exclusively personal-use offences carry up to six months or 360 daily-rate fines. Daily rates are not a fixed euro ticket, and quantity thresholds affect offence severity, not whether possession is legal.
- Smoking in public
- Consumption is not separately listed among prohibited acts, but official guidance explains that acquisition and possession make consumption indirectly punishable. No Vienna-specific fixed street-smoking fine was verified. Health-oriented diversion can apply under statutory conditions — that is not legalization or guaranteed immunity.
- Medical cannabis
- The official health portal confirms medical use of cannabis constituents, but a visitor's automatic right to buy cannabis flower or fill a foreign cannabis prescription was not verified. Prescribed cannabinoid medicines and cannabis flower are not interchangeable legal categories.
- Home growing
- Growing cannabis to obtain narcotic drugs is prohibited. There is no recreational three- or five-plant exemption, and lawful hemp plants or seed sales do not authorize growing intoxicating cannabis for harvest.
- Borders
- Unauthorized import and export are expressly prohibited by section 27, including personal-use quantities. Schengen travel and flights give no recreational exemption. Exact Austrian entry conditions for foreign-prescribed cannabis flower were not verified, so do not assume a prescription or Schengen certificate is enough.
